Eugenia Fortes Beach
Eugenia Fortes Beach or “East Beach” is a mid-Cape beach located on Nantucket Sound. Renamed from East Beach in 2004, Eugenia Fortes was at segregated East Beach in 1945 when a police officer asked her to leave. After she refused to leave, a group attempted to purchase and privatize the beach the following year; but Fortes stepped forward during the town hall meeting and discouraged the idea; explaining the discrimination she faced http://www.thehistorymakers.com/biography/eugenia-fortes-39. This beach is a popular spot for launching small vessels with storage. Sand is soft but has built up seaweed and shells with large concentration at the water’s edge where the slope is gradual. The water has a fair amount of seaweed, and waves are mostly small although the weather and boat traffic can create mid-sized waves.
