Pavilion Beach is located on Western Avenue in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Of the beaches in Gloucester, Pavilion Beach may be the least visited. Part of this beach is the home of the Gloucester Fisherman’s Memorial, a historic and scenic area where many tours buses stop. The beach area is not the main draw until St Peter’s Fiesta, a five day festival honoring the patron saint of the fisherman. The activities include a parade, carnival, concert, blessing of the fleet, and a greasy pole contest. The greasy pole contest has an oil-slicked telephone phone with a red flag placed at its end. Contestants try to run or walk across the pole and grab the flag. The entry to Pavilion Beach can be limited during high-tide. Soft sand is limited; the beach is a mixture of hard packed sand and pebbles with an easy slope into the water. Pavilion Beach is perfect to take in a bit of history or to avoid crowds from the busier local beaches.
