Winthrop Beach is located on Winthrop Shore Drive in Winthrop, Massachusetts. This mid-size beach is seldom crowded and generally filled with locals rather than visitors from other areas of the state. The first thing noticed when arriving at the beach is five wave breakers called “the five sisters” that help protect the local neighborhood from waves generated during storms. The sand is soft, with scattered dune grass; the beach is mildly rocky away from the water and extremely rocky toward the water, particularly during low-tide. In addition to traditional beach activities, planes can be viewed landing at Logan Airport, and cruise ships are visible traveling slowly at a distance.
